FUN!

Not everything needs to be fun….said no person with ADHD ever!

This is a paragraph from Your Brain’s Not Broken by Tamara Rosier, PhD. I relate to it on a very deep level;

“Here is an unconscious principle those with ADHD live by: Fun things get my attention, and therefore fun tasks get done. We are captivated by excitement and amusement, so our brains search the horizon for the interesting, the shiny, the curious, the remarkable, the exciting-and call it all “fun.” This principle affects our levels of drive, our motiviations, our happiness, and even our sense of well-being.”

There have been studies done that prove that the brains of people with ADHD aren’t able to anticipate a reward. That it’s only the reward itself that motivates us. We need immediate gratification. It’s not because we are lazy or spoiled or any of the other words that may have been described to us growing up. It’s because our brain works differently. But it also makes it really hard to get the mundane things done.

I think that’s why people with a neurodivergence love lists so much. It’s a mini reward to be able to cross it off our list of things to do.

Has anyone ever accused you of needing everything to be fun?

What things do you do to make the mundane things more fun?
